Taxonomists have recently decided that the Birdsnest Family [Monotropaceae] should be subsumed into the Heather Family [Ericaceae], which, in the UK, means just the Monotropa Genus. Thus the Monotropa Genus no longer exists. A new Genus, Hypopitys, has had to be invented for the plants in that were once in the Monotropa Genus. This has resulted in one of the strangest re-namings of any plant known: Yellow Birds-nest, which use to have the latin name Monotropa hypopitys has now become Hypopitys monotropa! Also, the Crowberry Family [Empetraceae] which contained the Genus Empetrum has been subsumed into this, the Heather Family. The Wintergreen [Pyrolaceae] Family containing the Genera Moneses, Pyrola and Orthilia has also been similarly subsumed into the Heather Family. Text on Family goes here
